Community University of the Valleys
History
The Community University of the Valleys - East is a community-based initiative of the Centre for Community and Lifelong Learning at University of Wales, Newport.
It was established at Tredegar during the summer of 2000 with financial support from the European Regional Development Fund. Since the Spring of 2002, CUV-East in partnership with the Workers Education Association, has received financial support from the European Social Fund part of the 'Progression through Partnership' Project.
CUV-East reflects the University of Wales, Newport mission as a community university and its commitment to widening participation. The project is based on the principle that disadvantaged communities are entitled to higher level learning opportunities.
Funding
The Community University of the Valleys - East was established by the University of Wales, Newport in 2000 with financial support from the European Union's European Regional Development Fund.
From 2002 to 2008, CUV was dependant upon support from the Objective 1 programme for West Wales and the Valleys. since January 2009, funding has been obtained from other Higher Education sources such as the Strategic Development Fund, in order to maintain and expand a range of curriculum, including Workplace Learning and Business and Management Studies which have been funded as a result of the Graham Review.
The University is committed to supporting community initiatives and staff are constantly pursuing funding sources in order to sustain the CUV in the longer term.
